Today, 8/5/13, my Dad and my Mom accompanied me to Hammond Hill SF. A few feet
from the "Snowplow Turnaround" sign on Star Stanton Hill, we heard
many warbler calls coming from the dense woods. Entering the forest, we
instantly we got great glimpses at a threesome of BLACK-THROATED-GREEN
WARBLERS. Walking along, we eventually heard a lone HERMIT THRUSH,
several BLUE-HEADED
VIREOS, and a Blue Jay which sounded an awful lot like a raptor. One of the
highlights of the day was absolutely wonderful looks at
BLACK-THROATED-BLUE WARBLERS, which reminded me a little of a (mini)
Black-billed Magpie. We had more exciting looks at MAGNOLIA WARBLERS,
which were
stunning in the bright sun. My Dad saw an adult feeding a fledgling.
To cap off the day, multiple BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS bombed around in a tree and
a stunning red male SCARLET TANAGER was spotted gorging on a large green
caterpillar. Overall, I only picked up one new species (BTBW), but
the viewing made the strenuous walk all worthwhile.

Good Birding,
Tilden
