This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 09 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON CACKLING GOOSE SANDHILL CRANE PEREGRINE FALCON MERLIN VIRGINIA RAIL BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE GLAUCOUS GULL ICELAND GULL NORTHERN SHRIKE MARSH WREN HERMIT THRUSH YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW CHIPPING SPARROW FIELD SPARROW COMMON GRACKLE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD RUSTY BLACKBIRD COMMON REDPOLL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 12/11: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Carncross Road 12/14: 40 SANDHILL CRANES were still around and seen from Rt. 89 near Pure Foods. 12/16: A late MARSH WREN was in Jackson Field near Montezuma Heritage Park. Cayuga County ------------ 12/15: A RED-THROATED LOON was seen from West Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven. Onondaga County ------------ Late and possibly overwintering CHIPPING SPARROWS were again seen in Manlius and in Syracuse near Barry Park. 12/10: A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on Dunham Road west of Baldwinsville. 12/12: 30 COMMON GRACKLES and 7 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were found on Sunview Drive in Elbridge. 12/14: The highlights of the Syracuse CBC were a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Minoa, a HERMIT THRUSH in the LeMoyne College Woods , VIRGINIA RAIL in Clay Marsh, aPEREGRINE FALCON IN THE CITY, a GLAUCOUS GULL in the Inner Harbor and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 12/15: A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues on Potter Road in Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. Oswego County ------------ 12/9: A COMMON REDPOLL and 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were found on Lakeshore Road in Granby south of Fulton. 12/15: A GLAUCOUS GULL, 5 RED-THROATED LOONS and a PEREGRINE FALCON were seen in the Oswego Harbor area. A MERLIN was found at Indian Point on the Oswego River north of Fulton. A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE and a RED-NECKED GREBE were seen from the bluff at Derby Hill. Madison County ------------ 12/13: A CACKLING GOOSE was found on Woodman Pond north of Hamilton.
