It is unfortunate that there is no such thing as a 'copyright' debate in the Arab world. Our copyright laws are becoming more and more restrictive due to international pressures such as international bilateral trade agreements. The policy makers in the Arab world do not understand that increasing the level of protection is not necessarily in the interest of society, especially due to the lack of helpful copyright exceptions in these laws. I hope that one day the Arab CC community can collaborate in raising awareness about the shortcomings of Arab copyright laws and help shape the future of copyright in the Arab world. The Arab countries are currently drafting an update to the Arab Copyright Treaty, but due to the way the system here works and the lack of professional civil society, I'm not sure if anybody outside Arab governments can have a say in how it is drafted.
