" I'm talking 2500s, a couple 2600s, ISDN smiulator,
etc. Looking at the lab book diagram, looks like I'm outdated and those
2811s and 3800s aren't cheap. Realistically how far I can go with my old
CCIE rack? I just loaded 12.3(24) IP PLUS on all the 2500s. "
Don't bother... google Dynamips as well as Dynagen
I've loaded the full ipexpert as well as the inetworkexpert labs on
my home pc ( dual Core Opteron AMD running XP) as well as on my laptop (
Core2 Duo running Linux) I'm using the 3745 latest main release of 12.4
code on the routers and it is working great ( and is the code that is in
the blue print).
" One difference I
noticed is my old IE workbooks required two 3550s, looks like 4 now,
interesting.... "
Yes, previous lab was 2 switches...new lab has 4 ... 2 x 3550's and
2 x 3560's.... It's a lot more fun now with extra L3 capable devices
added to the mix.... and boys, can you say private Vlans ....lol ...
You can simulate some switching components of the lab with the 16
port switch modules you can add to the router, but only on a basic level
...no MACL's , no Etherchannel L3 but you can do Etherchannel L2 ( you
can only set ON). So for going over the switching components of the lab
you can purchase rack time, or if you have 3550's and 3560's you can
bridge from the virtual routers to the physical switches.
If you have any other questions feel free to post ...i'll try to answer
if I can...

Hi everybody and it feels good to be back. I haven't studied for the
CCIE
in over 5 years, this time I plan on finishing it. I have a couple
questions I'm hoping that one of you can answer to get me started on the
right foot. I bought the IPexpert lab deal, too good to pass up IMO. I
have an old school rack, I'm talking 2500s, a couple 2600s, ISDN
smiulator,
etc. Looking at the lab book diagram, looks like I'm outdated and those
2811s and 3800s aren't cheap. Realistically how far I can go with my old
CCIE rack? I just loaded 12.3(24) IP PLUS on all the 2500s. I think
buying
50 sessions may be the way to go, but I've already dragged my rack and
all
my gear out of the attic, rack mounted it, cabled it, upgraded, frame
relayed it, and started playing with the CORE prots. One difference I
noticed is my old IE workbooks required two 3550s, looks like 4 now,
interesting.... Any wisdom is greatly appreciated and hope to get the
workbook soon and knock this out fast. Thanks in advance.

Two words.... Rack Rental. Or Proctor Labs. :) You can actually do
a
good chunk of things with the core technologies on your gear. Even
switching things, the 3550 is still on the lab, they've just added more!
(3560 is a bit different mostly in QoS). But spanning-tree is still
spanning-tree no matter how you slice it.
Do much of your core studies on your gear. Make notes of things that
don't
work. Target studying them with rented rack time.
You can rent LOTS of time and still save money over purchasing
equipment!
:)
Best of luck, and glad to have you back!

If you are just looking for economy pieces to add there are other
options
available.
2800s and 3800s are nice if you will repurpose them for something down
the
road, but a bit pricey initially.
I've seen 3640s with 32/128 mem and an eth module included go for under
$150
recently, and they can run 12.4.
3550s are going for under $600, so you could consider picking up one or
two
of those and just sell when you're done. I don't see them depreciating
much
in the near future.
