Jim,

The only reason you would configure the command is if a question
stated something to the affect of "configure R1 Fa0/0 to receive
multicast traffic for group x.x.x.x".  The purpose of the command is
to statically configure the interface to recieve traffic from a group.
 If a client was on the network they would join the group via a join
request and would not require the router to be statically assigned to
the group.

It can be good to use when you want to test your multicast/RP
configuration but is not a required component.
