The purpose of doing it is to simulate a user/machine that wants to
receive the multicast traffic so that you can test.  You are basically
telling the router "join this multicast group".  When you have a
receiver joining the group, you can test that your multicast is
actually working by pinging that group address.  When you ping the
group address you become a multicast source, and any receivers (the
router) should respond)
