Thanks everyone. I think that it was the little things that helped me
get through it this time. My first attempt was at RTP in November
just before Thanksgiving. I passed the config but failed the
troubleshooting section. I figured out by the percentages that I
missed passing by one question. Most of my studying was done using
all of the IP Expert material and some of the Cisco 360 labs. My
thinking was that I would get broader feel of lab questions from
different providers, each with their own perspective on questions. I
definitely think that it helped in that I passed the config section on
both of my attempts.

One of the biggest mistakes that I made during my first attempt was
that I had been practicing with Secure CRT and I would print out the
labs and work from them. I think that I had some time management
issues because of this. After I failed the first attempt, I moved to
using strictly Putty for connectivity. I also tried to make the
feeling as close to the real lab as possible when I was practicing. I
would only use one display and would have the labs only in electronic
format. I would also open notepad, calculator and the doc page before
I started the exams. Same with diagrams. I only used scratch paper.
I also timed myself more rigidly to try to simulate the timing
constraints for the lab.

How did this translate to my second attempt? Well enough to pass J I
will say that during the test though, I experienced a much different
feeling. While taking the troubleshooting section, I did feel some
stress. Of my trouble tickets, I raced through all but two of them
with plenty of time to spare. Of the two that I had issues with, one
of them I had no idea at the time how to accomplish what the ticket
asked for given the constraints. Even now that I have had time to
contemplate it and research it, I am not sure exactly what they were
looking for. The other one that I had an issue with, I was unsure
that I had correctly completed it when the troubleshooting section
ended. Based on the point values of these questions, I thought that
it would be very close thing to pass this section.

For the configuration section, I was well prepared for it. I think
that my changes in how I prepared helped out tremendously here. I did
not feel rushed at all.

Before I received my score report yesterday, I had been strategizing
how to go about being better prepared for the troubleshooting section,
since that is where I have had most of my difficulties with the exam.
All of the problems that I have seen aren’t difficult and if you ran
into them in your normal day to day job (without the 2 hour time
crunch), if you are well prepared you can solve them. Cisco does have
a couple of its timed ASET labs created for troubleshooting and I
thought that they worked well. I like the troubleshooting sections of
Volume 3 as well. The time constraints did not feel as telling as the
real lab, and I am not sure how to simulate that. My plan was to dig
up as many troubleshooting scenarios as I could and start drilling
like crazy with time constraints. Fortunately I don’t have to worry
about that now!

Patrick—have you received your results yet? Were you taking the route
switch track? Just so I can put a name with a face, where did you
sit? Of the four of us taking route switch, I was in the front left
pod. I wish you luck!
