Hello Max,
usually this normally happens when the shared tree is build then the path from 
the sender to the receiverr is being switched to the SPT.

To add a little more info, when I try and ping after leaving it alone for a
while, it works just fine. As soon as I try and ping again, it drops for a
while. Meanwhile the routers never lose the the ability to ping any of the
groups in either domain.

Very strange indeed....
