LOL it's not often that smaller is better!! Lot's of good info here so let me just add a few things. Know the defaults and understand when to use port-priority, and when to use cost.
Default port costs for IEEE 802.d (PVST+ in Cisco's implementation) 10 Mpbs 100 100 Mpbs 19 1 Gbps 4 10 Gbps 2 Default Port Priority value for PVST+ = 128 For Spanning-Tree manipulation you need to understand when to use which. Lab requirement may tell you to influence STP either directly or indirectly. - Cost on ingress link is a local decision - Cost on egress link does nothing - Port-Priority on egress link will offset the choice - Port-Priority on ingress link does nothing Switch1 interface fa0/15 spanning-tree vlan 777 cost 10 OR Switch2 interface fa0/15 spanning-tree vlan 777 port-priority 64 What if you can't do either of these? This really get's your brain thinking while you're in the lab you have to be able think fast! Interface bandwidth is another possibility since STP cost is based on bandwidth.
