The dashboard does not do an automatic request - you need to click on the refresh button manually.
There is an issue in JIRA to add automatic refreshes: http://jira.public.thoughtworks.org/browse/CCNET-507. So, if you would like this functionality, feel free to vote for it (this is for the 1.5 release, if possible).
