Career Development Fellowship

The MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit (Director: Professor Sir John Walker) wishes to appoint a Post-doctoral Scientist to undertake research into the structure of bacterial respiratory complex I, as a member of Dr Leo Sazanov’s group. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject and preferably some experience in protein crystallisation, X-ray data collection and model building/refinement.

Complex I of respiratory chains plays a central role in cellular energy production and is implicated in human neurodegenerative diseases and ageing. We have determined the first atomic structure of the catalytic core of this large molecular machine (Sazanov, L.A. and Hinchliffe, P. (2006) /Science/, *311*, 1430-1436; Hinchliffe, P. and Sazanov, L.A. (2005) /Science/, *309*, 771-774). Our aims now are to determine the structure of the catalytic domain in the presence of substrates, and to solve the structure of the entire complex by X-ray crystallography.

This is a three-year training and development position for a Post-doctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited previous experience of key transferable skills. The post provides opportunities to develop research project skills and collaborative links with colleagues within the Medical Research Council and elsewhere.

The work will be carried out at the Dunn Human Nutrition Unit, a world-renowned centre for Bioenergetics research. A full job description and additional information about the unit can be found at _www.mrc-dunn.cam.ac.uk <http://www.mrc-dunn.cam.ac.uk/>_. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr L.A. Sazanov by email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The starting salary will be in the range of £24,746 - £25,766 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward scheme, and optional MRC final salary pension scheme.

*Applications should include a covering letter and full CV, with the contact details of two professional referees who can be approached prior to interview. Quoting job reference DHNU/406/6, please email your application to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>** or post to: Recruitment Office, Personnel Department, MRC Centre, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 2QH.**

**Closing date: 25th May 2006***
