There are a couple of sellers in particular who routinely ask insane
prices, which I think distorts the economy: 'If that guy can ask a
gazillion dollars/pounds/euro for X, so can I."  I think few people
actually look at *completed* sales, i.e. what people really paid for
something.

That's what is happening on our local auction site (mercado livre). People raises prices on equipment, and the outsider comes and says "if he is selling for 1000, I'll sell mine for 1100 and see what happens" and the price goes to actual unpayable levels.

   $500 into a loose Atari 400? NO WAY.
