The Wikipedia article on Department of Energy (DOE) suggests that in 1974 the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was split into two organizations the Nuclear Regulatory Commision (NRC) and the other for energy research and development and I believe this is what is now known as the DOE. I book I found information on the IBM 1360 indicates 3 where sold to the AEC and one was installed at Livermore and another at Los Alamos both of which I am pretty sure are DOE facilities now. So it would seem that the AEC was the ancestor for both the DOE and the NRC.
