libc.so.5

So the obvious question from a Linux newbie, where do I get such a libc.so.5
for RedHat Linux 7.0 ? Luckily I was able to find it on RedHat's web site
after a bit of searching.

See
http://www.europe.redhat.com/documentation/rhl6.2/rhl_6.2_sw_repository/rhl_
6.2_cd_x86/libc-5.3.12-31.i386.php3

Which says, in part "Older Linux systems (including all Red Hat Linux
releases between 2.0 and 4.2, inclusive) were based on libc version 5."

Maybe Joerg, you could put a bit of a note into the PXupdate.txt file on
your FTP site
(ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/firmware/plextor/PXUpdate.txt) to
specifically cover the RedHat Linux problems with needing libc.so.5
(apparently from RedHat 5.0 and later releases), and this is dependent upon
also having an earlier version of /lib/ld-linux.so.1 (I installed
ld-so.1.9.5 from a RedHat 5.2 CD I had lying around, which also loads
ld.so.1.9.5 and libld.so) I think this explains why ldd from RedHat 7.0
didn't work - it certainly does now (is this actually a Linux "bug" with not
being to use ldd on earlier executables, or just a "side effect" ?). Maybe
other distributions of Linux are likewise affected if they don't include
libc5 support files as part of their base distribution. With the move to
glibc (libc6), it could reasonably be expected that fewer and fewer Linux
distributions will install the old libc.so.5 library as time goes on (so
this may become more and more of a problem).

Now, my Plextor PX-R820T drive has been successfully been upgraded to V1.08
firmware :)

I also noticed that your signature line points (apparently) to the wrong URL

> URL: http://www.fokus.gmd.de/usr/schilling

which returns a page saying

"
The Employees Page is available at ...
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/

If your browser doesn't automatically handle the redirect,
please click on the link above
"

Maybe time to update your sig (or hassle the IT guys who changed your web
pages and forgot to tell you) ?

Cheers

Jason
