Check whether there is no "unfriendly" application that tries to do concurrent 
access to the drive.

        Shut down all X applictations (inclusive the XDM login screen)
        I suspect that newer KDE versions mzy be the reason for such a behavior.

        If this is not possible write in single user mode.

If this helps, try to find the reason ;-)
