Lynn, Gore did not lose. The complete recount of Florida votes - the only count that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled was needed to assure equal protection - resulted in a very narrow victory for Gore. Add to that the fact that the Florida military absentee ballots arrived late and were unsigned by the military brass, in contravention of Florida law, but were nonetheless counted. Those absentee military ballots heavily favored Bush.
Finally, the nationwide vote was in favor of Gore - by more than 500,000 ballots. Gore won the election but Bush became president, no thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court.
