I use the folowing:

cat /sys/class/net/em1/statistics/rx_bytes

for the em1 interface

all other stats are available

Since ifconfig is deprecated, one should use iproute2 instead.

ip -s link show p2p1 | awk '/(RX|TX):/{getline; print $3;}'

However, the sysfs interface is probably a better alternative. See
