IMHO, I don't know your exact situation, but I've ended up paying for
classes AND/OR books myself... I think you'll find that investing in
your own career usually pays for itself... and more.

If your company doesn't want to pay for $1000 class, ask if they'll
pay for $500 of it, or $750 or something.. it will absolutely benefit
them...  Take it a step further, write up a cost benefit analysis for
your company... make it obvious to them why this class will benefit
you and them.
