Mark,

Guess I'm one of the lucky few, then -- I work for a boss who treats his
subordinates like human beings. He even tells people not to work too much
overtime, 'cause we're no good to him if we're too tired. (Of course, real
live crises are another matter, I'm talking about day in-day out stuff...)

Our corporate policies even acknowledge that "limited, occasional or
incidental" non-business use of email or web is ok as long as we
"demonstrate a sense of responsibility" and do not abuse it.

Bottom line: are you being productive and meeting reasonable work goals? If
so, it ain't broke so we won't try to fix it.
And gee it's nice not to be treated like a child at work!

Wish more workplaces were like this. My morale is much better from not
being micro-managed. And if I spend say a half-hour enjoying and chuckling
over the cf-community postings, then I make up the time. But nobody is
watching me punch the clock, especially since we're trusted to be
professionals.

Ben

Sorry, but I have to put in my .02 on this one. Maybe I'm going over the
line here or maybe it's because it's such a nice day today that I don't want
to be here and I'm in a bad mood. Whatever the reason, here it goes...

I think this country (US) is so obsessed with being "productive" and trying
to squeeze every second out of an employee that they're losing site of the
more important things in life. Those more important things in life, in my
opinion, are taking care of employees, who in return, take care of the
employer. Now, before all you manager types out there get into a hissy and
start explaining that time is money, blah, blah, blah, think about this from
another angle. Let's say John Doe spends 1 hour per day reading non
work-related emails. Now let's say that John Doe is already giving the
company an average of 5 hours of overtime per week (I don't know about all
of you, but 5 hours ot is on the low end). Doesn't that equal itself out?
Now take the stress and lack of sleep while John Doe is working 12-15 hour
days for 2 weeks (including weekends) to get the latest project done. Is Mr.
Doe actually working 12-15 hours? No, because the more stress and less sleep
he gets, the less productive he is.

Maybe I'm rambling here, but it makes me mad that somebody actually wasted
*their* time doing that study. That doesn't seem very productive. :-) I
heard that some other countries actually have laws against working over 40
hours per week. Is this true? Now, I don't believe in babying employees
either. I could care less about the "cool" atmosphere that so many people
are clamering for. I don't need the scooter, the pool tables, the massage
therapists, and all those other "perks". It just seems that we're being over
productive, making a lot of money, but we don't have any time to enjoy the
fruits of our labor. And who knows what it's doing to our health.

Whew, I feel better now. Does anybody have a comment or want to elaborate?
I've only wasted 30 minutes of my time going through email today so I still
have another 30 minutes to give. :-)

That's pretty funny.....

I do spend about an hour or two a day on email if I were to lump it all
together, ....

.......however, the friends I have made, the knowledge I have gleaned and the
stresses I have released make that time WELL WORTH IT to me! I mean, poor
'Python' would be utterly depressed if he couldn't chase after Gel and Ben!
