It seems in an effort to not loose money on the hardware, Sony plans to
come in at a higher pricepoint than previous console releases with this
  new batch.

  "

Gamespot has a small piece titled, Sony sticker shock 500.00 PlayStation
3 and 249.00 PSP are possibilities, from a 144 page report presented
today by industry analysts Michael Pachter and Edward Woo of Wedbush
Morgan Securities. Here is a bit from the article:

...the Wedbush analysts check in with their estimate of the PSP launch
price, pegging the hardware to sell at $249.99 and software to retail
  for around $30.

Probably the most exotic of the report's predictions was a reference to
Sony's PlayStation 2 update. The report suggests Sony is considering
adding PSX and TiVo-like functionality to the PlayStation 3. And if it
does, the sticker price on the unit could climb as high as $500.
  "

Perhaps we'll see two versions of the PS3, one without the extra
features that would just have the pure gaming aspects of the system that
may retail for less. If the PSP also plays music, and the latest movie
releases on its UMD format, then perhaps that 250US isn't too bad.
