retaliation after the 9/11 attacks. When Osama & Co took credit for the attacks,
We wanted our government to go after him. He was being hidden by the Taliban
government, and we gave the Taliban notice: Give him up or lose power" They
refused to give him up and thus the rationale for the invasion of Afghanistan -
That is still the rationale, and is supported by the UN and our Coalition of
allies.
While in the mood for retaliation, our current administration added to the mix
the previously held agenda by Rumsfield, Cheney and all of the old Former Bush
administration extended the fear tactics, intelligence mis-information and much
more that has been termed as deception and lies, the invasion of Iraq and
deposition of Saddam Hussein. Not many have claimed that Saddam was a nice guy
or completely innocent, but what has been established is that he was of no
immediate danger to the US or its interests (Unless you include his danger to
Israel, where he had much company including the Saudis, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon,
Syria and others)
The cost in money, national debt and American casualties in Iraq have far
exceeded those in Afghanistan where the invasion was justified but still
founders with victory still not yet in sight.
There is more than 50% of American opinion that believes the American people
were deceived and now that we are there, we are stuck in a modern day Viet Nam
wherein the US reputation, is being sullied, the Military are being demoralized,
The only remaining allies are those whom we pour tons of bribery (termed foreign
Aid) who are just following the money trail.
The lies and deceptions practiced and still clung to by the current
administration are so obvious, that only the most ignorant and thick-headed (not
to mention the profiteers) can't see it. It is almost to the point that I
would question the honesty, ethics, and patriotism of those who continue to
follow the Bush line.
As for civilian casualties, you only have to look at those when the Atom bombs
were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and made the Japanese realize that we
were bent on exterminating their entire race unless they capitulated, which they
did. Where were the outcries then? There were very few because the world
victims of the Japanese juggernaut were even worse off.
-----
I don't think Iraqi casualties are the reason for opposition to this war. At
least no one I talk to mentions that as a reason, unless as an abstracted aside
they think they should add.
The main reasons I hear are:
American casualties
American casualties
American casualties
American casualties
Being lied to about the reasons to go to war
Damage to reservists lives and livelyhoods
Loss of moral clarity and superiority
War profiteering
Cost
