During the Viet Nam conflict a number of buddhists protested by
immolating themselves in a public square. Admittedly those don't
represent the actions of a church, and I agree with you that as a
rule, organized churches and Swiss-style neutrality go hand in hand.
There are a few more salient examples of churches not remaining
neutral -- the most notable of which are instances of Christianity
performing the attrocity rather than intervening against one, such as
the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. Yes, I'm well aware that at
one point in time Christians were "a small unloved cult", "horribly
persecuted" by the Romans (before they adopted Christianity and so is
an attrocity performed by a non-christian faith)... but then had I
been a Christian I would not have been surprised by said persecution
after trying to burn someone else's city to the ground. I'm sure the
Romans considered that an attrocity -- too bad for Nero the
Christians' propaganda campaign turned out to be such a knock-out
success that 2000 years later people still believe he burned the city.
