Checking the health of my hard drive.

Can anybody point me to some free/shareware type tools that could give me a health status of my hard drive?  I've tried chkdsk, but it has not been as informative as I could help.  I think I may have a bad, or going bad, drive but it would be nice if I could get some reliable metrics of it before I go through the expense and trouble to replace it.
