My only observation here is that if homosexuality is wrong religiously then
it is patently not a governmental issue.
America stands for us atheists as well, does it not?
Although you bring up an excellent point: it's already clear that certain
religious taboos are not legal taboos. I can legally envy somebody all I
want, every day all day.
So where exactly is the line drawn? Where do we consider religious values
to form the basis of our legal system? Jeeze, homosexuality isn't even that
important topic in religion: it didn't make the top ten or the seven deadly.
So shouldn't the religious movement be more concerned about what God Himself
was concerned with? Shouldn't, using His own priorities, all that righteous
energy be directed towards a "no coveting" amendment or some solid "no
gluttony" legislation?
Where are their priorities?
Actually the priotities are somewhat messed up, IMHO
There are a large number of so-called organized religious pastors who insist
that homosexuality is a preference, not a orientation, hence it is supposedly a
learned trait, learned from other homosexuals who spend their time "recruiting"
among the confused young children. I have agued the fallacy of this thinking a
number of times with my own Pastor. An example is the Falwell and Pat Roberson
types.
They do this out of ignorance and to exert control over the congregation, by
instilling hatred and fear
It works quite well too, because playing the "children" card becomes very
emotional, even those there is little basis in fact to support that conclusion.
What makes it work so well is that the majority of Christians adopt what the
church teaches as opposed to personal study of the doctrine.
In fact records show that indecency with children (as well as most other
abuse) is most often perpetrated by heterosexuals. It would be a rare case
indeed when a Pastor admits that, however.
For New Testament adherents, there is only one mortal sin, and that is the sin
of not believing. all others can be forgiven through the grace of the almighty.
