  1) Great choice of beer.  That is my favorite.

  2) There actually some practical sense to it as well.  This is what my
  brother told me while studying the Blue Laws in Northern NJ.

  a) Northern NJ is predominately Christian.  Most of the police officers
  attend church with their family.  Thus trying to schedule anyone to come in
  on Sunday would be difficult.  This may or may not have anything to do with
  your area.

  b) This is actually more related to your situation.  Police Officers are
  slated to work x number of hours.  Any hours beyond is booked as overtime.
  State governments are doing everything possible to control the number of
  overtime hours they would have to pay out.  It would be a huge public
  relations disaster if the decision makers came out and said, "We will
  reduce police protection in order to balance the budget."  But that is a
  huge part of the decision.  They turn a bad situation into a good by
  claiming they are doing it for religious reasons which makes the masses happy.
