If you downloaded MSDE I'm not sure if you got QA and EM (Query
Analyzer and Enterprise Manager).  However you can download the demo
of SQL Server 2000 and run the install just the client tools.  They
are included with Demo, Developer, Pro and Enterprise editions of
MSSQL 2000 but IIRC they don't come with MSDE.

If you elect to install client tools only you'll be just fine.  These
are the tools that most people use on Windows... however if someone
has any suggestions for a Linux client I'm game ;)
