There several scenarios, admittedly with very small probabilities, that could result in the Electoral College being in a 269 to 269 tie. My understanding is that then the House chooses the President and the Senate chooses the Vice President. With a small shift, the Senate could be Democratic instead of liberal. This allows for a theoretical Bush-Edwards administration.
In this extremely unlikely outcome, imagine how one might feel being a Secret Service agent assigned to protect the President. How many potential threats might there be, with fanatical, left-extremist knowing what the loss of Bush would mean. This is just my overactive imagination at work; which probably explains why I enjoy Science Fiction so much.
