[17] Oliver Houston on Glazer camp allegation of Xenophobia
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:
"To say we are xenophobic is ridiculous. Fans’ groups have never cited Glazer’s
nationality."

"What better gift to put in someone’s Christmas stocking than a piece of the
club they adore. Shirts are for a season, but shares are for life. They will
also be helping the campaign to stop Glazer snatching away our beloved United."

Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:
Croatian third division side NK Nedeljanec have received a timely boost to
their own promotion campaign after supporters presented them with six tonnes of
potatoes. The club, who are based in a rural area of the former Yugoslavian
republic, had revealed that they were in financial difficulties despite topping
their division, and their supporters' club were happy to help by rounding up a
bumper haul of potatoes on their behalf.

"No one here has much money but we have lots of potatoes to sell, it is the
least we can do seeing as we are so near to promotion to the second division,"
said fan chief Ivan Fosnar. "We'll do everything we can to help our club. It is
not a problem to donate these potatoes if that will be enough to save the
club." Due to fans' generosity, the club now believe that they will make enough
money from selling the potatoes to complete the season, but should they win
promotion, fans have promised them more potatoes.

Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:

have to do to beat Chelsea. But if we're serious about doing well we know we
have to play much better."

[13] Fergie on United in Europe
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:
"We are a completely different team to the one that first entered the Champions
League years ago. These players have built up a wealth of experience over that
time. They know what European football is about and have come away with results
from some of the toughest places. I feel confident in these players facing
anyone."

[12] Fergie has no regrets over Wednesday
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:
"It was great for them. The opportunity we had to include the younger players
was too good to miss. If the group had been any different in terms of Uefa Cup
places for Fenerbahce and Sparta Prague then we would have taken a different
team. You have to respect your opposition. If the opportunity had been there
for Sparta Prague to make the Uefa Cup, then we would have helped it by playing
a more experienced team.

"Fenerbahce were confirmed as making the Uefa Cup and so the opportunity was
too good for us to miss. There was no need for me to play all my players. I may
need to use some of the players that played on Wednesday night in February. So
it was good experience for them."

Wes is definitely out of Fulham game with achilles injury. Fergie: "Wes came
off with an Achilles injury. That is one we will just have to be careful about.
I think he'll probably need a rest."

And on Ruud Fergie said: "We are just safeguarding against the injury Ruud has
had at the bottom of his calf. It is one of these injuries that if we don't
deal with it now then it will just keep resurfacing. We'll see his progress in
training on Friday and Saturday before making a decision on Monday."

Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by CrackWhore:
"I want to play more games. But I want to play them for Manchester United,
no-one else. I haven't asked the manager to outline why things have turned out
the way they have, it is not my style. All I will do is try to use any chance I
get to impress him. There have been a lot of questions asked about my future
but both myself and the manager have said it will be at Manchester United.

"As long as Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants you, nothing else matters. It was
the same three years ago when I was linked all sorts of clubs. But he said he
didn't want me to leave and that was good enough. He has always been
complimentary towards me and he knows he can trust me, so while I would have
expected to play more often, I am still fighting, will be ready when asked and
at the moment, am not worried about my future."

Clarification for Mr Leffler (see item 4)

Leffler said: "The only reason they hate [Glazer] – if they hate him – is
xenophobia and fear of the unknown, it's not logic. Our job is to change that.
To show that this is a true sportsman who will run your franchise like it
should be run and win you championships."

The reason we do not want Glazer has nothing to do with xenophobia.

The reason we do not want Glazer has nothing to do with fear of the unknown.

Aside from the sentiment and passion involved, the reason we do not want Glazer
in control has a lot to do with logic. We are debt free and do not want someone
who has to borrow heavily to take control of OUR Club. How will he pay the
debt back? By ripping of the fans and increasing profit as much as possible
and by taking a large share of this profit for himself. What part of that
logic do you not understand Mr Leffler?

Perhaps you the readers should discuss this with him as he said his job is to
change our perception of Glazer. Maybe we should show Leffler the logic of our
arguments!

HEAD TO HEAD TOTALS
League: Fulham 10 wins, Man United 26, Draws 12
Prem: Fulham 1 wins, Man United 3, Draws 2

HEAD TO HEAD at Fulham
League: Fulham 8 wins, Man United 7, Draws 9
Prem: Fulham 0 wins, Man United 1, Draws 2

Roy KEANE needs one goal to total 50 for Manchester United.
If involved, KEANE will be making his 450th appearance in a United shirt.
If he figures, Phil NEVILLE will be making his 250th Premiership appearance -
all for the Red Devils.

Lost four of the last five in all competitions.
Gone 14 League and Cup matches since a draw - 10 in the Premiership.
Drawn fewer matches than any other club in the Premiership (two).
Suffered the equal highest number of top League losses (nine, as have Crystal
Palace).
Competing with the lowest average gate in the Premiership (20,050).
Second worst disciplinary record in the Premiership (four red cards, 21
yellow).
Conceded only one goal in the first 15 minutes of a top division encounter.
Kept four clean sheets in the Premiership - and won all four games.
Failed to score in six top division fixtures - and lost all six.
The current tally of 17 points from the first 16 Premiership games is the
club's lowest tally to this stage ever in a Premiership season. In the previous
three Fulham have picked up 23, 19 and 25 points after 16 games and 23, 22 and
25 points after 17.
Need to net three more times to register 150 goals in Premier League history.

Fulham
Lost the last three at Craven Cottage in League and Cup.
Conceded two goals in each of the last two home matches.
Lost the last two home Premiership games and three of the last four.
No club have missed the target more often in front of their home fans.

CAPTAINING a team who progress to the last 16 of the European Cup after earning
a place in the Carling Cup semi-finals may sound prestigious, but Phil Neville
could be forgiven for perceiving his role in the Manchester United set-up as
confirmation that he will never be a fully fledged first-team player at Old
Trafford.
He did not quite ask Sir Alex Ferguson, after playing for the unofficial B team
in Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat away to Fenerbahçe, whether he could rejoin the
seniors, but he did remind the United manager that he is prepared to play up a
level.

Cristiano Ronaldo, only 19 after all, even if he did cost £12.25 million, just
about avoided shrugging his shoulders when his less illustrious team-mates
could not match his precision as the Turkish champions won with ease.
Selection, with qualification from group D of the Champions League assured,
represented a challenge for most peripheral or emerging players but something
of an indictment for the more established.

Not that Neville is complaining, as he relished the possibility of a
second-round tie with one of the monoliths of Italian football. Next Friday’s
draw will pitch United against Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Bayer
Leverkusen — to whom they lost in the 2002 semifinals — or AS Monaco, who
knocked them out of the quarter-finals in 1998. “We’re all very confident of
our chances,” Neville , 27, said. “We haven’t won it as many times as perhaps
we should have. Now it would be nice to get a big Italian club — I don’t think
we’ve had a really big European tie at Old Trafford for a while.

“Obviously the team that will play in the knockout stages will be totally
different. The squad that played in Istanbul have to look to the Carling Cup
now and to pushing the lads who are in the starting XI.That is very much my
aim.”

Captaining your side in the Champions' League, a tournament described by Sir
Alex Ferguson yesterday as the "best tournament of all time", would and should
be a sign you have established yourself at the highest level.

That's not how it works at Manchester United, at least not against Fenerbahce
on Wednesday night, when Phil Neville's armband was not so much a sign of
arrival, but of a footballing purgatory.

Most of the United side who slumped to a 3-0 defeat in Istanbul will probably
be waiting indefinitely to secure real first-team status, as opposed to
first-team outings in second-rate games in the League Cup or European dead
rubbers.

"The good thing about being manager is that you are in control of which team to
pick," Ferguson said, when asked for the umpteenth time why he had travelled
with such a weak squad.

A local journalist then suggested that unlike Fenerbahce's Christoph Daum, who
said it was a matter of club pride always to play your best team, Ferguson did
not care.

"I care about Manchester United," Ferguson shot back. "That is the important
thing, so while I am disappointed at the result I am not disappointed at the
team I selected.

"This game was important for the young lads who were involved. They will
remember it and next time they come here they will be better, believe me."

The wry smile suggested there had already been a rollocking for his defenders -
Neville, Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Quinton Fortune - whose work he
collectively described as "disappointing". Yet it is hard to see prolonged
action in Ferguson's A-team for any of them.

The optimistic Neville does not see it this way, although he conceded the
defeat was a "reality check" for him and his team-mates. He added that
Ferguson's faith in him was evidenced by a new five-year contract - though it
has yet to gain him a regular starting place.

In midfield on Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo was far from his best, although his
tenure among the elite should be assured as long as his attitude does not
become a problem. Ferguson took him to Turkey to demonstrate that he should not
get too complacent.

Darren Fletcher did nothing very wrong, or right. Eric Djemba-Djemba was too
permeable for an enforcer, Liam Miller too dormant as a creative spark and
Kieran Richardson too willing to let Fortune take responsibility for advancing
on the wing. Up front, alone, David Bellion did not get the service to prosper,
and lacked sharpness when a chance did come his way. In short, a team of young
individual talents, supposedly United's back-up and future, came up short.

This week, it did not matter. If United had won, and topped the group, the
potential lurking giants would have been Spanish, not Italian. "It is the
hardest challenge any team or coach will face in the game," Ferguson said of
the Champions' League.

It is not easy for young pretenders, either.

[3] Glazer still hanging around!
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, December 10, 2004 by Garryowen:
from Daily Telegraph

Manchester United fans will take the fight against the club's second-largest
shareholder, Malcolm Glazer, to the streets of Baltimore in the run-up to
Christmas in a move to further isolate the American multi-millionaire and
discourage him from launching another takeover bid.

Less than a month since Glazer was spectacularly ditched by his bankers, J P
Morgan, and his public relations company, Brunswick, after he had voted three
United directors off the club's board, militant fans' groups have targeted his
new Baltimore-based adviser.

Glazer, who owns 28.14 per cent of the club, has enlisted the services of
American sports PR expert Bob Leffler, who gave a controversial interview to
the Baltimore Sun newspaper in which he described United fans as "xenophobic".

Leffler, 59, who has a place on the board of the Glazer family's Zapata
Corporation, said: "The only reason they hate [Glazer] – if they hate him – is
xenophobia and fear of the unknown, it's not logic. Our job is to change that.
To show that this is a true sportsman who will run your franchise like it
should be run and win you championships."

The comments have infuriated United fans' groups, who have pointed to the 14
different nationalities in the first-team squad alone, as well as the club's
unprecedented global following. Fans have already discovered the date and
location of Leffler's company Christmas party in Baltimore's Inner Harbour
district and have used internet sites to encourage supporters to sabotage the
event. Action groups plan to target him in the same way they pursued Brunswick.
The City financial PR company found their mobile phones and e-mail accounts
deluged and had pizzas and even refuse skips ordered in employees' names.

One United fans' forum invited supporters to keep making false bookings at
Baltimore restaurants represented by Leffler's PR agency.

United fans' organisations like Shareholders United are still committed to
opposing Glazer's plans to borrow against the value of the club in order to
raise about £500 million towards an £815 million takeover. As well as saddling
the club with that debt, he also planned to sell Old Trafford and lease it back
as well as selling the stadium's naming rights to sponsors.

Glazer used his shareholding to secretly vote directors Andy Anson, Philip Yea
and Maurice Watkins off the board at the AGM last month. United's board will
try to get Anson reinstated early next year before they prepare to do battle
with Glazer at the next AGM when, crucially, chief executive David Gill will be
up for re-election.

Sources close to the Glazers have indicated that the family have spent the
month after their split from J P Morgan assessing whether they want to carry on
with the gruelling task of launching a hostile bid for United. They are said to
be "50-50", a climbdown from earlier in the year when they were confidently
increasing their stake.
