I think it's a little bit of both. They also have a very VOCAL user base - when a disc is bad it's almost always reported and replaced quickly. I think that's just to shut up the users which began as geeky early-adopters (and you know how open and forgiving those people are!) At any point you can hit "http://www.netflix.com/replacement" and select the disc you're having problems with from the ones you have out. A replacement will be sent out immediately. > >The quality of service depends greatly on your proximity to the mailing > >centers - we're only about 30 miles from the closest center and we get > >movies in about a day. > > I believe that Netflix gives high priority to new subscribers. Not here - we've been members since June 2001 (as indicated on our account page). Service has always been pretty much the same. Lately (very lately, in the past coupla months) there seems to be some weirdness in the shipping, but I'm not sure whose side that's one. For example if we send back three movies at the same time we'll get one movie back in about a day, then the other the next day and the last a day after that. It seems too orderly to be completely coincidental but I'm not sure if it's a mark of "non preferential" treatment. It doesn't bother me personally and they might actually be using our watch-and-return history to determine how much time to use. They may also be attempting to prevent copy-blasters from getting too good a deal: a pretty common tactic is to receive the NetFlix disk then immediately rip it to a PC and send it back. In that way an industrious household of geeks can rents dozens of movies in a month and watch them at their lesuire. I doubt it happens that much - it seems like way to much work to me - but staggering shipments would seem to be a strategy to prevent it from becoming a problem.
