I've struggled myself with the question of what do you call someone
who is living with you that you intend to stay with but that you are
not married to. I don't like significant other because it strikes me
as coy, and it can equally well mean the guy I am in love with this
week.

But I too was surprised when I found out that Kevin's partner was
female. I think his usage is better but it isn't common usage yet.
