Simply because I don't like the sound of any of those.

Girlfriend/Boyfriend is someone you're just with right now, but to me
it's not a strong commitment.

Husband/wife is someone you're legally married to. Some of my gay
friends will use the term anyway out of spite. Some refuse to use the
term until it is legally recognized.

Significant other is just dumb.

I don't see homosexuality as a negative, so I see no stigma with the
word. If it makes other people uncomfortable, that's something they
need to come to terms with.

"Politically correct" has nothing to do with it.
