Catholic teaching on this is unclear.  Some technologies required to
sustain life may be declined morally if they will not improve the
quality of that life after the use.  That is pretty ambiguous to me.  

After watching a good friend waste away on a respirator and feeding tube
for 5 years I don't want that.  His instant death in the motorcycle
crash would have caused less grief for family and friends that watching
him never improve.  He finally died of a heart attack while on the
respirator so his family was spared that decision.
