I considered using Smoothwall but opted instead for m0n0wall (m0n0wall.ch). It fits on a Compact Flash card. I installed it on a mini firewall device from Soekris Engineering (www.soekris.com). The whole things cost me under $300. The Soekris device is tiny, no bigger than a home networking router, supports wireless via add-in cards if you want, has three NICs so you can have a DMZ.
I found that m0n0wall has more detailed config options than smoothwall. It's quite a bit more complex, but worth it. >Anybody use the Smoothwall Firewall?
