Sure - although I'd have to see the context. I find that I often read the word "comprised" as "compromised" (perhaps it's just me). I'd worry about confusion on that score. But using a simpler term can't hurt either. Instead of "The whole is comprised of two halves" you can just as easily say "The whole is made up of two halves" or "The whole consists of two halves" or "The whole is formed of two halves" or "Two halves met, got together and - POW! - a whole".
