Just to throw an accessibility twist to this.  To some people reading a
document, left pane has no meaning (ie blind users using screen readers).

lol... no not all of it... it's all about "flow". :) to me "left pane"
has a natural flow/rythm... "left-hand pane" has an "artificial speed-bump".
The "tight in the crotch" analogy is all about the same thing -- impediments
to "flow" or movement.
