I think that it works better if the person is on hand.

I don't really know what kind of 'work' someone could do remotely that
would fall under the chores of a Seceretary.

Accountants etc. work remotely but that is a specialised job.

I guess the primary detail is exactly what this person would be doing.
Answering phones? Calling back clients? Forwarding calls, filing,
keeping track of invoices and inventory? Those are things that someone
usually has to be at the point of contact to do effectively.

Entering data into an online system, can be done remotely. So it
depends on these details.
