As just an FYI - I tried PSPVideo9 - and it had no problem reading the VOBs.

Now - to brag - PSPVideo9 ripped a one gig VOB file for me in about 20
minutes. While it was working, I noticed no slowdown at all on my
machine.

My VOB also had black bars on bottom and top, and I was able to crop
during encoding. Only bad thing is that I couldn't. test. Luckily the
last VOB in the collection was only 300 megs, so I could run that one
quickly and see how it came out.

Of course, I can't actually copy this yet to my PSP. Not until my
memory stick comes.
