Actually you can tell because odd things start happening when, for example you're ice fishing. It takes a looooong time to warm up the Ice House and then this frost starts forming on the walls that'll get about an inch thick. You can throw a glass of water in the air and it'll freeze before it hits the ground. You can pound a nail into your ice house with a frozen banana.
