When I first moved up here my commute was from Manassas to Crofton in
Anne Arundel county. Going the opposite way during commuting hours
would have taken about twice as long - easily 2 hours one way per day.

Have you considered Woodbridge or Dale City in the southern part of
Prince William county. It would still be a commute up to Chantilly,
but nothing nearly as bad as going from Anne Arundel county to
Chantilly. Alternatively look at Faquier or Warren counties. Here's a
semi crazy idea, Rappahanock country is about half way between
Chantilly and Fredericksburg, and housing prices are considerably
lower than anything closer in to DC/MD/NOVA.
