Al-Qaeda-linked group claims Aqaba, Eilat rocket attacks
08.19.2005, 10:11 AM

DUBAI (AFX) - An Al-Qaeda linked group has claimed responsibility for
the rocket attacks near US warships moored in the Red Sea port of
Aqaba and into a neighbouring Israeli resort.

The group, the Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Levant and Egypt, said in
a statement posted on an Islamic website that its guerrillas fired
'three Katyusha rockets' on the Aqaba and Eilat ports.

A Jordanian soldier was killed when unidentified attackers fired three
rockets near US warships moored in the Red Sea port of Aqaba and into
a neighbouring Israeli resort.

The US military confirmed the attacks but said there had been no
American casualties.

A total of three Katyusha rockets were fired from a warehouse in
Aqaba, landing in the port, a site close to a military hospital and
next to the airport in the nearby Israeli resort of Eilat, Jordan
said.

'The two US Marine ships docked at the port of Aqaba were not hit,'
Interior Minister Awni Yervas said. 'An investigation is underway to
determine the cause of the explosions.'

Lieutenant Commander Charly Brown later told AFP that both the USS
Ashland and USS Kearsarge -- the only US ships in Aqaba at the time --
left the port immediately following the attack.
