Tony, There are not "plenty of places to adopt your baby". There are tens of thousands of unplaced children already, and hundreds of thousands in temporary and long term foster care. If you feel so strongly about this topic, go adopt one or a half-dozen. They need your help, not more company.
The research shows that an unwanted baby is much more likely to be physically, sexually and mentally abused, more likely to commit serious crimes, more likely to live in poverty and more likely to die early than the average population. The research shows that since abortions were legalized, there have been fewer of these unwanted babies, and a corresponding reduction in crime (see the book Freakonomics for details). It also shows that more unexpected pregnancies are being kept more than ever (note the distinction betweeen unexpected and unwanted), that teen pregnancies are down overall, and that abortion rates are declining. This is mainly due to more societal acceptance for unwed motherhood and to more people having access to and education about birth control. As Gruss has been saying, if you really want to help this problem (reduce abortion), start by reducing the reasons for it. Support Planned Parenthood, support local adoption agencies, support abstinence programs, help support women who are willing to carry to term and give their child up for adoption.. Support education in general (women who voluntarily place their children for adoption are more likely to have higher education levels and higher job goals, and are more likely to come from higher socioeconomic situations). The reasons for abortions are often economic. The reasons for unwanted pregnancy are varied, but education is often the cure.
