In 1996, the age-standardized mortality rate for suicide was 12.9
deaths per 100,000 population in Canada.

Outlying regions in Far North and eastern Canada and urbanized regions
in Quebec have high suicide mortality rates

Peer group C, made up of regions in the Far North in eastern and
central Canada had some of the highest mortality rates from suicide in
Canada. In 1996, Northern Health Services Branch, Nunavut and the
Région du Nunavik had rates significantly higher than the national
average, of 27.5, 68.6 and 98.7 suicides per 100,000 respectively.
However, the Burntwood/Churchill region in Manitoba fared better than
the other regions in this group: its rate of 10.9 was not
significantly different from the national average. Data for Région des
Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James were suppressed due to high variability.
