You are right in that I didn't answer the "hard" question, partially because it was late at night here when it was posed and I was frankly shattered, but mainly because the answer would be so complex and lengthy.
The long answer would probably involve a discussion on the political and economic history of Europe between the wars, - frankly that is not my area of expertise and could really take this thread to new heights of confusion :) I will try to give some sort of answer though. I am a pacifist, I do believe that violence in any form is intrinsically wrong and should be avoided - if at all possible. Pacifism is a principle that I try to lead my life by, but if my wife was in danger for example I would do whatever was needed to get her out of that danger - using the minimum force that I could. I think WW2 was probably avoidable but the political decisions that were made at the time made it inevitable. Do I respect the people involved in the conflict? Well there is a difference in that many were drafted and did not make the decision of their own accord, so I certainly have more respect for them as individuals than I have for a career soldier. On rememberence day I do sometimes wear a poppy, but always a white one for peace, never red.
