Back in the 80's I worked for a major corporation which had been acquired by
a giant corporation. We went from being an independent company, to a
subsidiary, to a division of a subsidiary. They did wave after wave of
cutbacks and layoffs. Morale got worse and worse throughout the building.
(During the time I worked there, they went from 1650 employees at hq to 250
employees!) Everytime somebody got the infamous call to the conference room
and came back "dead", the collective heartbeat of the office stopped. It was
actually a relief when my boss finally called me in and said that WE were
being laid off. That was no way to treat people.
