I don't know. Honestly. This isn't blasphemy to me (so it would be in
quotes for me as well I suppose) but it is to them. What's the proper
response? Ask them.

I'm reacting not to the initial controversy but the reactions it seems to be
generating here.

A general sentiment recurring here seems to be "We don't have to respect
them in this. It's a stupid rule that only stupid people would follow and
we're better than that. Besides, they're all killers and crazies. Fuck
'em".

I find that more distasteful than the Muslim response simply because I
understand MY culture more and that kind of attitude is offensive to me,
culturally.

It's like any other cultural or religious stricture to me: I don't really
understand it. I don't really honor it. As much as I try and respect it
I'll never feel the same shame, anger, betrayal that a believer would feel.
I can't understand it - I don't have the tools to understand it.

But I do have to tools to understand stereotyping and intolerance. That's
something that I can feel honest shame, anger and betrayal about.
