I firmly of the opinion that this isn't - or more specifically shouldn't be
- a major news story.  It's an unambiguous accident which occurred in "off
hours" - Bush doesn't call Cheney every time he falls off his mountain bike.

At the same time Jerry's post struck a nerve... I, for example, didn't think
that the Monica Lewinsky story should have been a major news story (at least
until he perjured himself).

In both cases it seems the core issue is an embarrassing event that really
doesn't affect the job but are later turned into "character issues".  The
argument goes "if he'd lie for that he'd lie for something more important!"

I'm not sure about the validity of that (I think it depends on the person)
but I do see similarities in the stories.  Differences in degree to be sure
but perhaps not in kind (although Cheney's case is clearly an accident -
Clinton's penis didn't "slip" - but still I'm talking more about the press
reaction).
