No.

I'd only see this as a problem if it introduced complexity and broke
away from the standard of the application design, making it more
difficult to maintain over time.

Ethical to try new things.  Possibly a bad decision in the long run if
it makes the app less maintainable.

I think your employer should expect you to continually learn new
things, on the clock or not.  You can't just stop learning new things
when at work, just like you can't stop from thinking about solutions
to work problems while away from work.  There are plenty of examples
where I've thought of a solution to a work problem while in the shower
or driving home from work.  I don't bill for that time.  On the
flipside, I might spend time learning at work and might bill for it. 
As long as it's relevant, balanced, and you are getting the job done
it all evens out in the end.
