my first mouthguard was purchased off the internet and advertised as an
apnea device. It was about $100 and was a good quality, however, you're
only supposed to form it one time and ...well....it took me three times
until I got it correct, but by then the original form factor was lost.

2nd mouthguard was purchased at Academy Sports. It was just a regular
football mouthguard that you boiled and formed same as the 1st mouthguard.
It ended up being a little stiffer than I wanted.

3rd and current mouthguard was picked up at CVS. It's a mouthguard sold as
a cure for teeth grinding, but it works just the same as the previous two.
It's softer than the football one so I like it better.

I recently had my wisdom teeth pulled and while I was there I explained to
the dentist about the mouthguard and asked him if I was doing any damage by
wearing it. He said no and that he had known of a couple of dentists that
were fitting them professionally. He kinda rolled his eyes when I told him
about buying one off the internet the first time :)

When I first started using the mouthguard, my jaws did get a little sore.
That was one of the reasons I had to reform the first mouthguard 3 times. I
was a little overzealous in how far out my jaw should stick.

As far as I know, this works only for closed mouth sleepers. I saw one
mouthguard that was for open mouth sleepers, but I can't attest to how well
that works.
