If he doesn't want the cats just take them to a no kill shelter or rescue organization. There's no need to bullshit them by making anything up, they'll take the cats regardless.
No Kills and rescue orgs, spay and neuter as a matter of procedure. It's almost impossible to get an intact animal from one of these organizations. Three of my cats are rescues, they were all spayed and/or neutered by the organizations that I got them from. They were all someone else's house cats. (I have one cat that was a feral kitten, that is intact, she's too old at this point to try and have here spayed) Thanks Scott Scott A.
