Having known some of the people who owned all that stuff, I have to say they
brought it on themselves. Just as in the rest of Latin America (including
Mexico) a handful of elites have controlled the country and hoarded all the
wealth for themselves.

I don't agree with nationalization, though. I would have a responsible
foreign entity partner with Venezuelan firms- someone like BP, Exxon, etc.
that has strict financial disclosure rules they have to live by so you have
transparency in what happens to the oil. Then I would do what they have done
in Alaska- give a percentage of the oil revenue every year directly to every
citizen of the country via bank deposits.
